Certain behaviors could indicate that divorce is on the horizon

On Behalf of | Feb 17, 2023 | Divorce |

Every marriage is different, and every couple that chooses to go through a divorce does so for reasons that are important and specific to them. While divorce is a deeply personal process, there are also certain common indicators that may point to an increased likelihood of a marriage ending. According to relationship-based research, four common behaviors may indicate that a Mississippi couple has a larger chance of going through a divorce at some point in the future.

Interpreting certain types of actions

Studies suggest that approximately 40% of all marriages in the United States end in divorce. By researching behaviors, experts believe they have identified certain behaviors that could indicate that a marriage may be in trouble. These common, potential red-flag behaviors include:

  • Contempt
  • Criticism
  • Defensiveness
  • Stonewalling

If a Mississippi spouse sees these types of behaviors in his or her marriage, it may be important for him or her to look ahead and consider future possibilities. If a divorce is imminent or even a possibility long-term, it may be prudent to begin preparing for that process now. This foresight can help one prevent issues and lay the foundation for a strong post-divorce future.

Looking ahead

A spouse’s future is at stake during a divorce. By looking ahead, it allows one to identify priorities, specify personal goals and determine what is necessary for a strong post-divorce future. While certain behaviors do not necessarily mean that it is inevitable that a marriage will end, it can still be helpful to plan for this contingency and learn how to protect one’s interests.
