Negative actions can impact a child custody arrangement

On Behalf of | Dec 24, 2021 | Child Custody |

The actions of Mississippi parents after a divorce have the potential to negatively impact their children. Child custody and visitation are complex matters, and the difficult feelings between two parents don’t necessarily stop simply because the divorce is final and a custody order is in place. These emotions may lead to issues such as parental alienation, and this can cause long-term damage to a parent-child relationship.

How is it harmful?

Parental alienation occurs when one parent intentionally tries to harm the child’s relationship with the other parent. This can happen through direct efforts, such as refusing to abide by the visitation schedule or keeping the parent from important events in the life of the child. It can happen indirectly by speaking negatively about the other parent in front of the child or cutting off communication.

Alienation can lead to a child having a distorted view of his or her parent. This can lead to serious damage in the relationship, and it may cause irreparable damage. If a parent suspects that alienation is happening, he or she may benefit from taking immediate steps to make it stop and halt any continued harm that may be occurring.

Options for parents

Parents who believe that parental alienation is happening may benefit from working with an experienced Mississippi family law attorney. There are steps a parent can take that will allow him or her to stop harmful actions and help repair the relationship. This is a serious concern, and immediate action is prudent once alienating behaviors are noticed.
