The ideal schedule for co-parents after a divorce

On Behalf of | Jan 11, 2023 | Divorce |

Divorce will have significant impacts on the youngest members of the family. In order to reduce the potential impact of a divorce on the children, some Mississippi parents choose to co-parent, providing their children with the stability and security that comes with regular access to both parents. However, co-parenting does not always mean that each parent will have equal time with the children. Each family can choose a co-parenting schedule that best suits their individual needs.

Possible schedule options

The ideal co-parenting schedule depends on the needs of the parents, the kids and other factors that are unique to the individual situation. While there is no one-size-fits-all solution to this matter, there are a few common co-parenting schedules that many families choose. Some of these include:

  • Bi-weekly — With this option, parents will alternate weeks that they will have the kids in their home.
  • 2-2-3 routine — With this schedule, kids will be with one parent for two days, with the other for two days, and then back to the first parent for three days.
  • Non-50/50 routine — There are situations in which a non-traditional schedule will be best for the specific family based on work schedules, special needs and other factors.

Each Mississippi parent has the right to fight for an outcome that is reflective of his or her parental rights while still protecting the best interests of the kids.

Thinking long-term

Any parent making custody decisions will benefit from considering the long-term impact of these choices. When navigating custody and visitation matters, it will be helpful to discuss matters with an experienced family law attorney. This guidance is helpful when choosing the ideal custody schedule for the family.
