The holidays and co-parenting: Making it easier for everyone

On Behalf of | Nov 19, 2020 | Child Custody |

The end of the year is especially difficult for divorced Mississippi parents. The holidays mark a time where schedules are different and there are many important events in the life of a child. This can lead to complications and difficulty with a co-parenting arrangement. It will be easier for everyone involved if parents take the time to learn how they can make this time of year easier for themselves and their kids.

First, it’s crucial to remain flexible. While sticking to the terms of a parenting plan is essential, flexibility may be essential for things like school programs, holiday parties and visiting with family. When a parent needs to change visitation or adjust the schedule, it is more respectful to ask for it instead of demand it. This will cultivate a sense of mutual respect between parents and make both parties more willing to work together.

Things are different after a divorce, including family traditions. Acknowledging that things will not be the same is the first step, but then a Mississippi parent can move forward with creating new traditions that will ultimately be just as meaningful. During the holidays, it may also be prudent to discuss wishes with the children to better understand what they hope for and need in order to be happy during the holidays.

Co-parenting can be challenging, especially during the holiday season. This is why it is essential to have a strong and thoughtful parenting plan in place. In addition to a carefully crafted custody plan, a willingness to put the needs of the kids first is important. This will prove helpful during a busy and sometimes stressful time of year.
